Thankful Turkeys

I hope everyone had a lovely Thanksgiving Weekend. We have so much to be grateful for.  We have been discussing what we are thankful for in both our writing and craft activities.

Fall Tree Art

We used a pointillism painting technique with q-tips to create the leaves on the tree branches and ground.  Then we glued on crumpled up tissue paper to add texture and a third dimension to our Fall Tree Artwork.  This art project tied in nicely with our "Leaves are Turning" Poem of the Week.  Reminder: When your child read's a poem or song to you from their Orange Poetry and Song Book, please initial the back of that page each time they read/sing that poem.

Math: Patterning

We have been learning all about patterns in Math.  Here are some of the concepts we have been working on...

-comparing, sorting and classifying objects according to specific attributes (e.g., colour, shape, size,)
-exploring patterns and pattern rules
-identifying and reproducing simple patterns
-creating and extending patterns using a variety of materials or actions
- identifying the CORE of a pattern (the part that repeats over and over again)
- labelling patterns in different ways (e.g., with letters, numbers, words, etc)
- representing patterns in a variety of ways
- recognizing patterns in the environment

Check out the patterning videos in the Math Videos section of this blog.

Here are some pictures from some of our group/partner patterning stations...

Letter Sound / Word Work

Our letter/sound of the week last week was Ss.  We brainstormed a list of 46 words that start with the letter Ss.  We came up with some 'spectacular' words like 'scrumptious'!  We showed the number 46 in a tally using tick marks.  We also practiced printing the letter Ss nice and neatly.  We are learning about how tall letters touch the 'sky line' at the top, short letters stay under the dotted 'road line' in the middle, and tail letters hang down below the 'grass/dirt line' at the bottom.

Our word family of the week last week was the -at Family.  We had -at Family words hidden around our room and students did a 'write the room' activity where they found the hidden words and recorded them on their clipboard page next to the correct picture.  They also filled in missing -at words to complete some simple sentences and did a cut and paste activity where they matched the -at word to the correct -at picture.

Ordinal Numbers

We have been learning about Ordinal Numbers in Math.  Ordinal Numbers tell about the position or order of something.

We read the book "Henry the Fourth" by Stuart J. Murphy.

We created a monster truck race on the carpet and labelled each truck with an ordinal number and word.

Students did a cut and paste activity to create their own little fish race and label the fish with ordinal numbers.

Check out the "Ordinal Numbers" video under the Math Video tab of this Blog.

Mmmmmmmmm.... Apple Sauce!

Thank you to Mrs. Synnott (Mrs. Kutcy's Mom) for helping us make homemade applesauce yesterday.  Our classroom smelled so yummy as the apples cooked in the crock pot with some cinnamon and a little bit of sugar.  Many students enjoyed the applesauce and gave it a thumbs up, while others chose not to taste it.

Western Day / Caring Assembly

I am so proud of my SK/Gr 1 class for leading the Caring Assembly today.  Everyone did a fantastic job sharing our message about how to be a CARING Cowboy/Cowgirl and fill up other people's buckets.  We will always strive to be bucket fillers, rather than bucket dippers.  Our classroom caring bucket is already 75% full.... we are well on our way to a special surprise!  Keep earning those caring cubes for our bucket and caring hearts for our classroom kindness board.

Congratulations to Cara, Clara and Lucy who received the Student of the Month Award for being such kind and caring kids!
