Apple Orchard Field Trip

Thank you to Kennedy Orchards for welcoming us to their Apple Orchard today.  Also, a big thank you to Rose's Dad, Lucy's Mom, and Malcolm's Mom for joining us as volunteers on our first field trip.

Students learned about apple farming techniques and enjoyed picking 5 organic Empire apples each.

Orange Shirt Day

Today, September 30th is important in the residential school experiences of
First Nation, Metis and Inuit people as this was the date when children would
be removed from their homes to attend residential school.
The last remaining Residential School in Canada closed only 21 years ago,
in 1996. Thank you to my students who wore an orange shirt with pride
today! We are making a difference by showing that we CARE about
ALL PEOPLE, no matter their race, colour, or culture. WE ALL MATTER and
must be treated fairly.  We will continue moving forward in the spirit of
reconciliation and respect.
Thank you for helping us remember!!

Sit Spots

On Friday, we spent some additional time outdoors as the gym was occupied (due to Picture Day).  Students were creative with their free time outside.  One group of students were busy tracking 'yappy wolf' paw prints all over the yard.  Another group of students were playing a 'Ninja Spy' game on the playground equipment.  Other students were showing great teamwork as they worked in pairs to boost friends up onto the monkey bars.  We finished our time outside with 5 minutes on individual Sit Spots.

A Sit Spot is a child selected space where he or she can observe nature.  I encouraged the students to choose a spot on the school yard where they could get comfortable all alone (away from other classmates).  Mrs. Patterson has been teaching about the 5 senses in Science and therefore I encouraged the students to take 5 minutes to do some deep belly breaths and really focus on the present moment using their 5 senses.  We came back together as a group to share what we could see, smell, hear, and feel (we didn't taste) during our outdoor Sit Spot session.

Some students quickly mastered how to relax and be calm on their Sit Spots, while other students found it challenging to be still and tune out other classmates who were nearby.  We will continue to practice Sit Spots occasionally when we take our learning outdoors.

Study Buddies

Our Study Buddies from Mr. Bristow's Grade 4/5 class helped us practice logging into the Chrome Book computers with our individual login names and passwords.  We explored some language and math games on the website starfall.com.

They also helped us with our special "Heart Art" project (chalk rubbing technique to make the hearts really POP out on black construction paper), which we will be showcasing at our Caring Assembly this Thursday.

Super Hero Terry Fox Run

I am beyond proud of our SK/Gr 1 class who raised over $575 for the Terry Fox Fundraiser.  Our school raised over $4000.  Incredible fundraising for an amazing cause! Way to be CARING, Nottawa Nighthawks!  It looks like Mr. Perry will be getting a pie in the face at our Spirit Assembly (Thurs. Oct. 3rd - 11:20am), Mr. Durance will be doing something 'special' to his beard, and our school will receive an extra recess as a reward for our amazing fundraising efforts.  We will find out who won the class Pizza Party at the Spirit Assembly.  Here are some pictures of our Super Heroes!
