Writing Prompt and Math Problem of the Week

Sept 9th:
Math Problem: Mrs. Kutcy visited her cottage 2 times in July and 3 times in August. How many times did she go to her cottage in total over the summer?
Writing Prompt: What is something you would like me to know about you?

Sept 16th:
Math Problem: Sort the socks in your drawer into 3 groups.... light coloured socks, dark coloured socks and multi-coloured socks. Count the number of socks in each group. Which group had more? Which group had less? Were any of the groups equal?
Writing Prompt: Tell me about a time when someone showed you that they were a CARING person.

Sept. 23rd:
Math Problem: Mrs. Kutcy picked twelve apples at the apple orchard. She brought them home and gave one to her husband, one to her daughter, Molly and one to her daughter, Grace. How many apples does she have left? Show your thinking with pictures, numbers and words.
Writing Prompt: Have you ever been to a Fair or a Carnival? Tell me about your experience.

Sept 30th:
Math Problem: Mrs. Kutcy donated four toonies to the the Terry Fox Run. How much money did she donate in total?
Writing Prompt: Why do we wear orange shirts on September 30th?

Oct. 7th:
Math Problem: Mrs. Kutcy added 20 cubes to our caring bucket on Friday, but then she had to remove 4 cubes. How many cubes did the caring bucket gain on Friday?
Writing Prompt: What does the word "Cooperation" mean to you? Can you give an example of cooperation?

Oct. 15th:
Math Problem: Create a repeating pattern using items found in nature. Can you identify the CORE of your pattern? Can you label you pattern in different ways (e.g., words, letters, numbers)
Writing Prompt: What does it mean to be grateful? What are you grateful for in your life?

Oct. 28th:
Math Problem: I have a necklace that has a repeating pattern. The first bead is purple, the second bead is pink and the third bead is blue. If this pattern core continues repeating... what colour will the fifteenth bead be?
Writing Prompt: Are you looking forward to Halloween? Why or why not?

Nov. 4th:
Math Problem: Record the weather each day for the month of November on a calendar (e.g., sunny, cloudy, rainy, snowing, windy). At the end of the month, use both tallies and a bar graph to show the weather data you collected for the month of November.
Writing Prompt: Why is Remembrance Day an important day?

Nov. 11th:
Math Problem: Ben has 6 Pokemon cards. James gives Ben 4 more Pokemon cards. How many Pokemon cards does Ben have in total?
Writing Problem: Are you happy to have snow in November? Explain your answer with a because statement.

Nov. 25th:
Math Problem: Cara has 8 marbles. Grace has 4 more marbles than Cara. How many marbles does Grace have? If Grace and Cara put their marbles together, how many marbles are there in total?
Writing Prompt: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

Jan. 9th:
Math Problem: Mrs. Kutcy got a box of chocolates for Christmas. The box had 4 rows of chocolates with 5 chocolates in each row. How many chocolates were it the box? Mrs. Kutcy ate 7 chocolates from the box. How many chocolates were left?
Writing Prompt: What was a highlight of your Christmas Break? Was there anything you didn't enjoy about the holidays?
