Highlands Nordic Field Trip

We had an awesome day on our Highlands Nordic Field Trip.  We spent the morning learning about Materials, Objects and Everyday Structures.  Students participated in hands on activity stations including...

-Making a Bridge:  Constructing a small bridge using K'Nex supplies and analyzing the shapes in the bridge that help make it sturdy and strong.
-Tool Time: Hammering nails, using screw drivers, bolts and nuts, and sawing styrofoam.
-Making a Tower: Building a free standing tower out of styrofoam pieces and toothpicks and measuring the height.
-Making a Frame: Using wooden pieces, bolts and nuts to build a square frame with a strut (2 triangles)
-Making Paper: Using recycled materials to make paper.
-Human & Natural Structures: Analyzing objects made by humans and objects made by nature.

In the afternoon we participated in the "Leader of the Pack" Program.  We learned about what makes a good home for animals (the availability of food, water, shelter and space).  We discussed the difference between wild animals and domestic animals.  We sorted animals into groups according to what they eat (meat eaters - carnivores, meat/plant eaters - omnivores, plant eaters - herbivores). Students were put into animal groups and we played a game in the forest where animal groups had to try and survive as many days as they could by finding Food, Water, Shelter and Space stations without being eaten by the wolves, squirted by a water bottle from the 'hunter' (Mrs. Kutcy!), or run over by vehicles (road kill!).

Thank you to our parent volunteers (Lucy's Mom, Grace's Mom, Malcolm's Mom, Clara's Mom, Mielle's Dad and Emma's Grandma) for making this trip such a great success!
